TVRA are thrilled to introduce a brand new initiative brought to you by CommUNIty – a partnership between Talbot Village residents and Bournemouth University. A whole series of events are being set up which will be packed with opportunities to connect, learn and grow together!
There will be a wide range of free sessions and activities designed to benefit everyone:
Actual Events will be listed below as they are organised. Most will likely take place in a venue situated in the Bournemouth University campus (a map can be found here), but details will be provided against each event itself. Most events will be entirely free for residents of the village, so please invite your neighbours as well as attending yourself.
Reports on previous events can be found in the previous events section following the upcoming events section (quickly find using the button above) , so that if that event comes around again you can get a better idea if it is suitable for you.
What a great evening at the CommUNIty event, ‘Demystifying AI’ – thank you to everyone who joined us!
A huge thank you to Dr. Phil Wilkinson for leading such an engaging, down-to-earth session that truly made AI feel more accessible and less intimidating. You helped take the mystery out of the machine!
We’re so grateful to Bournemouth University for their ongoing partnership and support in helping us bring events like this to life through CommUNIty, connecting residents, students and staff in meaningful and inspiring ways.
This is what collaboration looks like and it’s only the beginning!
Message from Jo Keeling:
“This day was a very special day for me. Since becoming Chair of the TVRA, my ambition has been to provide free first aid training to our community. It wasn’t just another event, it was something I’ve been determined to make happen because when the unthinkable happens, knowing what to do, can be the difference between life and death. First aid is something I’m incredibly passionate about, not only because of my background in Policing but because I live every day with anaphylaxis, knowing how quickly life can change in an emergency. Led by expert paramedic lecturers, we gained the confidence to act when it matters most. From delivering basic life support, CPR and using a defibrillator, to recognising cardiac arrest, heart attacks, strokes, anaphylaxis and choking, practising lifesaving techniques on both adults and children, it was a truly empowering session. A heartfelt thank you to Dr Peter Phillips, Adam Bancroft and Phil McConnell from Bournemouth University for delivering a session that was not only insightful and empowering but filled with warmth, humour and genuine care. Thank you also to Layne Hamerston for his help behind the scenes in bringing it all together and to Professor Alison Honour, whose community spirit and belief in what we’re building with CommUNIty is helping turn a simple idea into something truly transformative. Seeing people of all ages come together to learn, support each other and walk away ready to save lives is nothing short of inspiring. This is what community looks like, and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of it. Watch the video to see what we did! “
In the latest of our CommUNIty events, Layne Hamerston, BU Community Partnership Manager, led a session in how to live a more active and beneficial lifestyle. Through examples and even a bit of practical exercises, he demonstrated how we can all live a more active and heathier life.
He detailed a lot of upcoming activities and initaitives that the University have planned for us, some of which are already detailed on this page. Keep your eye on this website and the Notice Boards for further details.
The first interactive CommUNIty event took place in the Fusion Building last night. I think we were all impressed with the quality of the lecture theatre we visited.
Layne Hamerston, BU Community Partnership Manager, led the session. He showed us a video of the Universities vision, and also explained his ambition and desire to explore closer ties with the local community, especially here in the village.
He detailed a lot of upcoming activities and initaitives that the University have planned for us, some of which are already detailed on this page. He also asked for suggestions for activities from the attendees, and a very useful and enthusiastic two way session took place exploring future possibilities. More to follow on this. Keep your eye on this website and the Notice Boards for further details.
Students from Bournemouth University hosted our inaugural CommUNIty event at the Student Centre on the Talbot Campus. They provided cake and a cup of tea or coffee for the residents who came along. It was very nice to meet both the students and other fellow residents.
Gillian Lewis, the Community Partnerships lead also organised a tour of the campus for residents. We visited a number of buildings including the impressive Fusion building and even saw Dylan’s Bar!!
It is worth remembering that all coffee shops and food venues, plus the shop are open to the general public if you wish to visit. I can heartily recommend the fish and chips in the Fusion Building (a Friday speciality)!!
